Information On Monzo Bank Fraud

Fraud involving Monzo Bank customers often targets them through phishing attacks, account takeovers, and other cyber crime scams. Fraudsters impersonate Monzo, contacting users via emails or messages that appear legitimate. These methods aim to extract sensitive information like account passwords and verification codes.

It’s important to note that the scammers don’t care if you bank with Monzo or anyone else, for that matter. For example, we’ve also written advice on Halifax Bank fraud, Metro Bank fraud and other banks as well.

It goes without saying that Monzo Bank has safeguards in place to try to combat all of the latest scams that are doing the rounds. For example, they may use two-factor authentication (2FA), real-time transaction monitoring, and customer alerts to try and prevent suspicious activity.

However, scammers will still try to carry out Monzo Bank fraud, which means you should always keep an eye out and let Monzo’s security team know about any suspicious activity that you are worried about straight away.

Bank Fraud Scams That Are Popular At The Moment

Scammers exploit common tactics to target digital bank users. Understanding these scams makes it easier to avoid falling victim.

  1. Phishing Emails and SMS
Fraudsters send fake emails or texts mimicking Monzo, requesting sensitive information like passwords or card details. These often include links to counterfeit websites designed to steal login credentials.

  2. Automated Push Payments (APP)
APP scams occur when you are convinced to send money from your Monzo account to a fraudster. Investment scams, purchase fraud and impersonation scams are all current examples of APP fraud.

  3. Impersonation Calls
Criminals pose as Monzo employees, convincing users to disclose security codes or transfer funds to “safe accounts.” These scams rely on creating urgency or fear of account breaches.

  4. Fake Job or Investment Offers
Fradsters lure victims with job scams or investment scams, requesting account details for payment transfers. These often result in accounts being used for money laundering or unwanted transactions.

  5. Social Media Scams
Fraudsters reach out via platforms like Facebook or Instagram, claiming to offer rewards or discounts. These messages redirect users to fraudulent links or request personal data.

There are, of course, other ways that criminals might try to conduct Monzo Bank fraud. Therefore, you should always be wary when providing bank information and verify directly through Monzo’s official website or app to confirm any communications.

If you have been targeted and lost money from your Monzo Bank account and have not been able to secure a refund, please let us know. We offer completely free advice and could help you to secure a refund of the money you’ve lost.

Case Study: Woman Loses £6,500 in Monzo Bank Fraud

The Independent has reported that a 31-year old Monzo customer was scammed into giving over her bank cards to criminals who then pocketed £6,500 from her accounts.

As is common, the criminals contacted the victim, pretending to be from her bank’s security department and raising “concerns” about some recent transactions. Unfortunately, the scammer’s script left the victim so terrified that she was convinced into handing over her cards to a courier who had been sent to “secure evidence against the criminals”.

During the call, the customer gave her PIN to the fraudsters, applied for a loan and took out an overdraft. Once the attacker had gained the victim’s trust, they took money from various accounts. At the time the Independent’s article was written, the bank was still investigating what happened, so it is unclear whether a refund was issued

Spot Signs That You're The Victim Of A Banking Fraud

Recognizing banking fraud early helps minimize damage and protect your finances. These signs often indicate that you’re a victim:

  • Unfamiliar Transactions: Seeing unauthorized or unexpected charges in your Monzo account suggests fraud. For example, recurring payments to unknown merchants or withdrawal attempts you didn’t initiate.

  • Account Access Issues: Inability to log in to your Monzo app, especially when combined with alerts about password changes or failed login attempts, often points to unauthorized account control.

  • Unsolicited Communication: Receiving emails, texts, or calls claiming to be from Monzo, especially when requesting sensitive details like PINs or one-time passcodes, signals a potential scam.

  • Missing Money: Unexplained account balance reductions or transfers to unknown accounts should raise immediate concerns about fraudulent activity.

  • Notifications of New Linked Devices: Alerts about a new device accessing your Monzo account without your authorization highlight possible unauthorized access.

  • Requests for Personal Information: Unexpected requests for details like bank account numbers, security codes, or login credentials, even if they appear legitimate, may be scams targeting your account.

Be vigilant and watch for these signs, as fraudsters often exploit users’ trust and urgency to commit their schemes.

Will Monzo Refund Scammed Money?

Monzo has an APP fraud refund policy but how you were scammed will determine whether you’ll be refunded.

Monzo Bank might agree to pay a refund if:

  • A scammer convinced you to send them money from your account.

  • You realised what had happened and reported the fraud to Monzo right away.

  • You did not share or give out your account details carelessly.

However, Monzo staff could refuse to refund you if they suspect that you were grossly negligent or ignored fraud warnings during the transfer process.

If My Monzo Fraud Refund Is Turned Down, What Can I Do?

We know that if your bank turns you down for an APP refund, it can be very upsetting. You might think that you’re at the end of the process and there’s nothing else you can do. However, that’s not necessarily the case. You could:

  1. Speak to Monzo and ask them to put the reasons for their decision in writing.

  2. Ask the Financial Ombudsman Service to investigate.

  3. Speak to us for free legal advice. Our fraud recovery experts could take your case on and see if your refund request has been handled correctly. It’s not unheard of for banks to make mistakes, and if we spot any, you could be entitled to your money back.

If you’ve been unable to secure a Monzo Bank fraud refund, why not give us a call? There’s nothing to lose by doing so and, at the end of the day, it could mean that your refund request is upheld.
